Security guards are an essential part of businesses. They interact with people on a daily basis, and are the representatives of the company they work at and the company needing the service. We know that soft skills are needed to be successful in any job, but what soft skills are needed for a security guard? What soft skills should a security guard possess if they wish to be a step ahead of other guards?

Security guards typically have these five soft skillsets:

  • People Skills
  • Communication Skills
  • Problem Solving Skills
  • Ability to take direction
  • Observant

At the end of the day, the goals are simple: safety and security.

THEY ARE A PEOPLE PERSON

First and foremost, the security guard profession is a people profession–there are interactions with people (especially with those in residential and condominium security) many times in a guard’s shift. However, a guard is there to secure and protect, must also understand the balance of allowing people to feel safe and comfortable while the guard is on duty.

THEY KNOW HOW TO COMMUNICATE

Secondly, guards have to be excellent communicators. One thing that guards in the residential business encounter is angry residents. For example, a guard should be able to diffuse a situation whenever a situation arises.

THEY CAN SOLVE PROBLEMS

Third, understand that problem-solving is not only the fact of being able to solve an issue or situation that arose, but also being able to solve the problem in a timely, and a calm, professional manner.

THEY CAN TAKE INSTRUCTIONS

Fourth, security guards are able to enforce the rules and regulations of the property that they are securing. In other words, there are many instructions and procedures that are associated with any security job, and they require the skill to be able to follow directions.

THEY ARE OBSERVANT

Lastly, security guards are required to be alert and aware of their surroundings. A guard is typically hired to protect property and to deter criminal activity. A guard must be aware of the people who enter a building, suspicious individuals, and out of place items, just to name a few. A security guard can keep the property and people protected if they are aware.
